The Election Commission has requested the Ministry of Finance to provide funds for five eligible political parties.

The Elections Commission said today it has requested the Finance Ministry for the allocation of funds to eligible political parties except the Maldives National Party (MNP). EC said the request was not made for MNP because some of the information provided by the party is incomplete.

The parties eligible for funds this year are Maldives Democratic Party (MDP), Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), Jumhooree Party (JP), Maldives Development Alliance (MDA), Maldives National Party (MNP) and Adhaalath Party (AP).

The largest budget among political parties this year, too, is allocated for the largest political party in Maldives, MDP. While MDP has been allocated MVR 14,212,790.92, the second largest political party, the opposition party PPM, will receive MVR 9,544,204.46.

In addition to this, MVR 5,680,521.16 is allocated to JP while MVR 2,591,106.24 is allocated to MDA. And while MVR 2,434,979.29 is allocated to MNP, MVR 2,412,485.93 is allocated to Adhaalath Party.

For the running of political parties, this year's state budget has allocated MVR 36,896,088. According to the Political Parties Act, 0.01 percent of the state budget must be allocated to political parties. This amount is allocated to political parties with at least 10,000 members.
