MDP Chairman Fayyaz Ismail said today he will thwart the attempts made to destroy the party from within.
In a message sent to the MDP National Assembly WhatsApp group, MDP Chairman Fayyaz Ismail said senior members of the party are working against Ibrahim Shaz, who is contesting the Guraidhoo constituency election on the MDP ticket. The MDP Chairman said these members are calling MDP members in the constituency and asking them not to vote for the party ticket.
"The tension over the presidential ticket has now gone to another level and God willing, I will not allow the attempt to deliberately destroy the party to succeed. Things can be tolerated out of respect only to a certain extent," said the Economic Minister and party Chairman Fayyaz, indirectly threatening the party president, former President Mohamed Nasheed, who is working with a separate faction within MDP that he has formed after losing the presidential primary.
The Guraidhoo by-election is scheduled for tomorrow. Three candidates from three political parties have filed their nominations for the Guraidhoo constituency. They are MDP's Ibrahim Shaz, MNP's Ali Arif and opposition PPM's Hussain Riza.
The seat became vacant following the passing of the Guraidhoo MP Ibrahim Riza, brother of Hussain Riza.
