MDP candidate Ibrahim Shaz has won the by-election for the vacant Guraidhoo seat in the Parliament.

In addition to Shaz, PPM candidate Hussain Riza and MNP candidate Ali Arif contested today's by-election. The candidate who was closest to Shaz in terms of support was the PPM candidate while the MNP candidate got few votes.

While MDP has won the Guraidhoo constituency seat, the party has never won this seat or any other seat in Male' Atoll in any previous election. Therefore, winning the Guraidhoo seat is a very historic moment for MDP.

The election was held in the three islands in Guraidhoo constituency, Guraidhoo, Maafushi and Gulhi, plus in Male' City for citizens of those islands living in the capital.

The Elections Commission had determined for the polling to be held from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm today.

A total of six polling stations had been set up for this by-election. They were 2 polling stations in Guraidhoo, 2 polling stations in Maafushi, 1 polling station in Gulhi and 1 polling station in Male' Izzudheen School.

A total of 3423 people were eligible to vote in this election, out of which 80 percent had voted.

The by-election was held following the passing of former Member of Parliament for Guraidhoo constituency Ibrahim Riza on February 23 while undergoing treatment for an intestinal ailment.

This is the second by-election in the ongoing 19th Parliament. Earlier, a by-election was held in the Komandoo constituency following the passing of MP Hussain Waheed who was suffering from cancer. That election, too, was won by MDP.
