Jumhooree Party leader and presidential candidate Qasim Ibrahim has stated that the foreign policy of his government will be the same as that of the first President of the second Republic of Maldives, Ibrahim Nasir, and the second President of the second Republic, Al Ustaz Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.

While Qasim has said this, he had been the Minister of Finance in the government of President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.

The foreign policy of the former Presidents Nasir and Maumoon was to maintain relations with foreign countries on an equal basis without relying on any particular country.

After Ibrahim Nasir, who was also a Prime Minister of Maldives, achieved complete independence of the country from the British, he maintained a policy of non-dependence on any particular country.

After replacing Nasir, even President Maumoon, who ruled Maldives for thirty years, followed the same policy. He appointed the late Fathulla Jameel as Foreign Minister and pursued an equal foreign policy for all countries without depending on any particular nation. He maintained an impartial policy at the United Nations too.

As such, back then Maldives pursued an equal and impartial policy towards Islamic countries and even other countries. Equal opportunities for other countries to invest in and strengthen relations with Maldives without being dependent on any particular country had resulted in Maldives receiving assistance from many countries for development and essential needs.

JP has now announced that it will contest the upcoming presidential election. The party's presidential candidate is the party's leader and Member of Parliament for Maamigili constituency, Honourable Qasim Ibrahim. The party has already started talks with various parties to form a coalition led by the party.
