Kaashidhoo MP Abdulla Jabir has stated that reserving senior positions in resorts for locals will benefit the country's economy.

Jabir said this while debating about a resolution in the Parliament that he submitted, calling for the reservation of important positions in resorts such as that of resort managers, HR managers and accounts managers only for Maldivians. Jabir said the presence of foreigners in senior positions in resorts is preventing many locals, who have the ability to hold such positions, from getting promotions, and the economy is being adversely affected by the dollars entering Maldives going to foreigners.

Jabir said that no matter how highly educated the locals are in the important fields of the tourism industry, there is no hope of getting a high position in a reputable resort. Therefore, he said that while foreigners in those positions take a large amount of dollars abroad, the issue of few dollars coming into the pockets of the locals is a matter of concern as a Member of Parliament.

"This resolution should result in a positive change in the economy of Maldives," said the Yacht Tours Company Chairman Abdulla Jabir.

Noting that foreigners being in resorts with large salaries should be put to an end, the Kaashidhoo MP said there are many complaints that the management companies of some resorts are treating the locals poorly.

Jabir said that Maldives' tourism industry has been developed for 50 years due to the skills of the people working in the sector, adding that locals are hardworking and intelligent.
