The Environment Ministry has stated that the price of plastic bags has been increased due to the deletion of an article in the Waste Management Act during its passing in the Parliament. The Ministry said they have proposed an amendment to the Parliament.

The Environment Ministry said this at a time when people have started complaining about the price of plastic bags rising sharply after shops started charging a fee of MVR 2 for plastic bags sold to customers

The Environment Ministry said the increase in the price of plastic bags was due to the removal of the provision that exempted 50 plastic bags or more from the fee.

The Ministry said that since the Waste Management Act is an important law, instead of sending it back to the Parliament, the Ministry has proposed amendments to the law after ratifying it.

The amendment was moved by Komandoo MP Mohamed Rasheed on behalf of the government. The proposed amendment to the Waste Management Act would exempt bundles containing 50 plastic bags or more from the fee.

The Environment Ministry said the amendment to the law would solve the problem of rising plastic bag prices.
