Maradhoo MP Ibrahim Shareef has stated that the Elections Commission should make a decision on the candidacy of former President Abdulla Yameen in the upcoming presidential election.

Shareef said today that the Elections Commission should take a decision on Yameen's candidacy as soon as possible, saying that even the opposition party PPM can move forward after EC makes a decision about their leader's candidacy.

Shareef said that EC should decide as soon as possible, whether when the case of a person serving a judicial sentence is pending on appeal, the person can contest elections, noting that Yameen has appealed his verdict but has not yet reached a final verdict.

The Maradhoo MP said EC President Fuad Thaufeeq had said that Yameen could contest the upcoming presidential election.

While the main opposition party PPM has announced its presidential candidate as the party's leader, former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, many people do not believe he will be able to contest the election due to the 11-year prison sentence he is currently serving, plus other charges against him.

Regarding this, EC President Fuad said that Yameen has the opportunity to submit his candidacy to contest the election and the chances of accepting the candidacy are high, even if the appeal process of his case is not completed.

Citing supporting evidence, Fuad said the court had given the opportunity to a former MP to contest an election despite his prolonged appeal process. Therefore, the EC President said if the Supreme Court does not quash the ruling on Yameen, he will seek legal advice on accepting Yameen's candidacy.
