The Minister of Home Affairs, Sheikh Imran Abdulla has stated that even if the oppressors may not believe it, the May Day protest changed the history of the country.

On the occasion of International Workers' Day, Minister Imran said the large protest held in Maldives on May 1st of 2015 changed the history of the country. That protest was led by Imran.

Imran said the May Day protest changed the history of Maldives, even if the oppressors and their supporters would not believe it.

Imran said the people of the country were saved from the injustice and tyranny of the then President Abdulla Yameen, by the grace of Allah, with the unity they showed on May Day and their courageous action.

Imran was charged with terrorism and sentenced to 11 years in jail for his remarks during the 2015 May Day protests.

After the defeat of Yameen in the 2018 presidential election, the court has released many political prisoners jailed in connection with the 2015 May Day protest.
