China's Ambassador to Maldives Wang Lixin has said that the Maldives government has apologized to China for sending a letter to the Parliament requesting the appointment of an ambassador to Taiwan.
China's Ambassador to Maldives Wang Lixin said the Maldives Foreign Ministry had explained the incident to Chinese officials and apologized for sending a letter to the parliament seeking the appointment of an ambassador to Taiwan. The Ambassador also said that the government has assured that the modern relations between Maldives and China will be maintained.
Taiwan claims to be an independent state separate from the main Chinese government. Maldives has long supported China's 'One China Policy' and said there is only one China in the world.
However, in a letter to parliament last week, President Solih proposed that Maldives appoint an ambassador to the Republic of China or Taiwan.
The letter was sent to the parliament to replace the current ambassador to China from Maldives.
Therefore, it is believed that the letter is written to appoint an ambassador to Taiwan by mistake.
