The Election Commission (EC) dissolved the Maldives Reform Movement (MRM) in accordance with the Political Parties Act and Rules said Vice-President of EC Ismail Habeeb.

The MRM, led by former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, was dissolved because it did not have the 3,000 members required by law. The party's leader and former president Maumoon said the Election Commission had decided to dissolve the MRM under an illegal and corrupt procedure.

Election Commission Vice-President Ismail Habeeb told "Ras Online" that the MRM was dissolved after the party failed to reach the 3,000 membership required by the Political Parties Act. Habeeb said the MRM was dissolved in accordance with the Political Parties Act and Rules and if he is not satisfied with the matter, he should go to the relevant authorities.

Habeeb said the notice expired on Tuesday and was sent to the party in March. However, the party has not tried to recruit members and a large number of people have left the party themselves, he said. Habeeb said the party has been banned from conducting political activities due to insufficient number.

The MRM needed 29 members to reach 3000 However, a total of 140 forms were submitted in two rounds since the notice was sent, of which 66 were valid. However, the party does not have the legal number of members as a large number of people have left the party due to recent incidents.

The Election Commission has decided to dissolve the Maldives Reform Movement (MRM) under Article 30 (h) (1) of the Political Parties Act.

Therefore, if the party has any debt, it should inform the commission.
