7,000 tourist beds will be added to Addu City with ongoing development projects, President Ibrahim Mohammed Solih said today.

President made the statement while speaking at the official launch of the Addu City land reclamation project.

In his address, President Solih said the development of Addu City should be brought by expanding the land of the city. Therefore, the government has initiated a project at a cost of MVR 1.5 billion to dredge the land, he said.

The President said the project will add 190 hectares of land. In addition, a project to dredge 42 hectares of land at a cost of MVR 179 million is being prepared, he added.

President further stated that many projects are being implemented to develop tourism in Addu City, in addition to land expansion project. He highlighted that the number of tourist beds in Addu City will be increased with the tourism project run in Hankede.

"A total of 600 beds will be added to other islanda in Addu City. When the projects are completed, a total of 7,000 tourist beds will be operated in Addu City," said the President.

Speaking about the Shangri-La Resort in Addu City, the President said the government is working to finalize the release of the government stake in the resort. So once it is finalised, the resort can reopen for operation, which will benefit the economy of Addu City.

To further support in boosting the City's economy, the President said the SDFC is working on arranging the necessary finance for the development of guest houses in Addu City as well.

Before concluding his speech, President repeated his prior statement, that the Maldives will not be developed without developing Addu City.
