Speaker of the parliament Mohamed Nasheed defends the owners of the Kandima Maldives resorts in a discussion issue raised as an emergency matter at the recent parliament sitting.

Nasheed said that it is not appropriate to blame the owners of the Kandima Maldives Resort for negligence in the increase in the number of positive cases reported from the resort. Nasheed’s statement comes while closing the discussion at the recent parliament sitting,

Kandima Maldives resort issue was raised as an emergency matter at the parliament by parliament member Ahmed Amir. The emergency matter was presented at the parliament after multiple cases positive to Covid-19 was reported. Positive cases were reported following the test samples taken after one staff member from Kandima passed away while being positive to Covid-19.

Speaking about the owner's Nasheed said that the owners run businesses other than the resort and the owners of Kandima Maldives have contributed to the tourism industry of the Maldives for a longer period of time.

Nasheed also suggested that actions should be taken, if any negligence was found from the increase in the number of positive cases reported from the resort and from the staff who passed away.

The staff member who passed away from Kandima Resort reported being sick for over ten days before he was hospitalized, in Dhaalu atoll hospital due to deteriorated health. Following his test results showing positive to Covid-19, the Health Protection Agency (HPA) conducted multiple tests on Covid-19 from Kandima Resort and from which 60 cases have been reported positive.

This is also the first time where multiple positive cases to Covid-19 were reported from a tourist facility in the Maldives.

Following the multiple positive cases to Covid-19 reported from Kandima Maldives Resort, Maldives Police Service, and the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives continue to investigate to see whether any negligence of the resort is involved.
