The Attorney General, Ibrahim Riffath in a tweet said on Monday that two bills; proposing reforms to the composition of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), have been delivered to the parliamentary group of ruling MDP for presentation to the People’s Majlis, Legislative Assembly.

The two bills proposed, consist of relevant changes to the constitution and the law. The bills; if voted and passed without amendments after debates on the floor of the assembly, will reduce the number of members in the commission to seven from ten presently holding office.

The three members eliminated from the commission will be the representative of the President of the Republic at JSC, the Speaker of the People’s Majlis and the President of the Civil Service Commission.

The AG said that these reforms were introduced into the bills after holding consultations with ordinary people, civil society and experts aiming to combat and ultimately eliminate all undue influences navigating into the justice system which originate from other powers of the State.

Riffath further said that reforming the justice system is one of the most important pledges of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and that the process was started in 2019.

He said that under the reform process, nine bills related to the sector have been presented to the parliament.

With these two recent bills, Riffath believes that President Solih’s promise on the segment is fulfilled.
