At the expiry of the deadline on June 22, on filing protests against the permanent list of qualified electors in the presidential election; scheduled for September 9, the Election Commission of Maldives (EC) has received a total of 551 complaints.

The permanent list was published on June 11 and on the same day, the Election Commission started accepting public complaints against the final roll which lasted for ten days.

The Election Commission said that the 551 complaints received are of six types and include 465 filings related to deceased persons appearing in the list, 58 filings related to change of address, 19 filings for exclusion from the list, 5 complaints on change of names, 3 complaints on change of constituency and 1 filing related to change of national identity card.

According to EC, if the first round of the presidential election was not decisive, a second round would be held on September 30.

A presidential election must be held between 30 to 120 days before the 5-year term of the presidency ends as per the Constitution of Maldives.

In the permanent list published by EC, 282, 755 (male voters: 144,408 and female voters: 138,347- and first-time voters: 21,000) electors would be entitled to vote in the first round on September 9.

The total number of qualified voters has increased 10 percent compared to the presidential election held five years ago where 262,135 electors were eligible to vote.
