The City Council of Male’ decorates the streets of Male’ and Villimale’ with festive and colorful lights to celebrate the Great Eid (Eid Al Adha).

The celebratory night lights were lit by the Mayor of the City Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on Monday night in a ceremony marked to held the event at the Republican Square (Jumhooree Maidan).

Speaking in the ceremony, the mayor said that he believed that as “the Maldives is a 100 percent Muslim country, the Eid festivals should be celebrated colorfully at official levels”.

He said that other important celebratory dates in the calendar have been marked with colorful lights and ceremonies by the authorities while the important Eids (the lesser Eid and the Great Eid) had not been treated as such for years now.

In another event introduced by the council for the first time during this Great Eid, animals will be slaughtered after the Eid prayers this morning and their meat will be distributed among the deserving public.

The City Council placed special decorations at 22 locations in Male’ and Villimale and used 2,224 lights for the occasion.
