The Government of Maldives has strongly condemned the desecration of the Holy Quran in Sweden carried out by an individual named Salwan Momika, coinciding with the holy day of Eid-al-Adha.

Salwan Momika, the 37-year-old Iraqi who fled to Sweden several years ago, tore up and lit pages of the Islamic holy book on fire outside Stockholm's central mosque on Wednesday.

Condemning the act, the government of the Maldives said in a statement that, "the recurrence of this deeply despicable and disrespectful act hurts the religious sentiments of millions of Muslims across the world, and simply cannot be justified on the grounds of freedom of speech and expression."

"These appalling acts of islamophobia undermine our collective endeavors to uphold the principles of tolerance and coexistence," the statement further read.

The Government of Maldives also reiterated its call to end such abhorrent acts against Islam.

The Quran burning on Wednesday took place as Muslims around the world celebrated the first day of Eid al-Adha.

Swedish police had given Mr. Momika a permit for the protest, in accordance with free-speech laws. However, later police said the incident was being investigated for incitement of hatred.
