The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has said that internal elections of the party to choose its top leadership will be held after the presidential vote in September.

Important positions in the leadership were vacated when the party’s President and the Speaker of the People’s Majlis Mohamed Nasheed and its Vice President and former Minister at the President’s Office Mohamed Shifaz left the party to form The Democrats.

MDP’s Chairperson and the Minister of Economic Development Fayyaz Ismail told reporters yesterday that a new leadership of his party would be elected after the September vote.

He said that the presidential election is on top of the party’s priority list at the moment as “there is not much time left for concentrating on other matters”.

Nasheed and Shifaz were elected to the positions of president and vice president of MDP respectively in 2019.
