President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said yesterday that 6,200 land plots will be granted in August to permanent residents of Male’ who had qualified for his government’s Binveriya (land owner) Housing Scheme.

Inaugurating the reclamation of the second phase of Gulhifalhu lagoon that sits a few hundred meters away from the western shoreline of Villimale’, President Solih said that the primary purpose of the project was (once completed) granting land plots for living.

“This is the largest project to be launched in the country towards completely solving the national housing crisis. Further, this project will include infrastructure developments impacting positively on the economy”, President Solih told the attendees at the ceremony held in the previously reclaimed part of Gulhifalhu lagoon.

President Solih said that when Gulhifalhu is reclaimed as planned, adding 150 hectares to the existing 68 hectares, 218 hectares will be available for living purposes and for economic activities.

He also said that to meet the requirements of his Binveriya program, additional land will be reclaimed in Giraavaru lagoon which sits to the north of the industrial island Thilafushi.

“Approximately 2000 from Gulhifalhu, 2000 or more from Giraavaru new reclamation and 2000 or more from Hulhumale’, altogether 6,200 land plots will be granted from the three locations”, President Solih said.

President Solih plans to handle all the complaints he receives against the preliminary list of qualifiers for Binveriya program that was published on June 26 and finalize the roll enabling him start delivering the land plots to their rightful owners in August.
