Jumhooree Party’s (JP’s) Leader and its presidential candidate MP Qasim Ibrahim says that former President Abdulla Yameen is entitled to a fair trial which is guaranteed in “the bill of rights” of the constitution.

Leader Qasim’s appeal to the court system and the government emerged amidst growing criticisms of the present government for allegedly influencing the outcome of President Yameen’s ongoing hearing at the High Court.

President Yameen is the “presidential ticket-bearer’ of the opposition PPM-PNC coalition in the presidential vote scheduled for 9th September. An appeal against Yameen’s eleven-year prison sentence which he is presently serving is being heard at the High Court and a ruling of the court will decide whether he competes or not in the presidential vote.

Currently, the leadership of the opposition are expressing their concerns as some previously scheduled hearings are being cancelled due to a leave allowed to a justice of the High Court’s bench.

PPM-PNC leadership held a meeting with JP’s leader Qasim yesterday. After the meeting, Qasim tweeted that “one of the purposes of the existence of the constitution is to ensure fair and just trials among many other rights guaranteed in the bill of rights”.

“I have a question for the present government. Are you on course, while you have all the powers of the State, in your journey conquering justice as promised before?”

Leader Qasim chaired the constitutional assembly from 2006 until the completion of its works in June 2008. The new constitution produced and passed by the assembly was ratified by the then president of the country in August 2008.
