The Elections Commission of Maldives (EC) granted political-party status to The Democrats (TD) that is led by a breakaway faction of the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

Vice Chairman of EC Ismail Habeeb said yesterday that the new party was registered after they completed the official requirements of registration.

The commission decided to grant the status to TD in its 793rd general meeting of its board members who voted unanimously to approve the registration of the party.

The inaugural assembly of The Democrats was held last week where officials from the commission counted heads and inspected voting on the party’s interim rules among many other requirements that needed to be fulfilled before a political party is registered at EC.

The assembly elected MP Hassan Latheef as the party’s interim Chairperson and three others to the position of Deputy Chairperson.
