The Ministry of National Planning, Housing, and Infrastructure (MNPHI) has awarded the Construction of the Second Phase of the Road Development Project in Fuvahmulah City to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC).

The Director General of MNPHI Fathimath Shaana Farooq and MTCC’s CEO Adam Azim signed the contract worth MVR 236.3 million (US$ 15.32 million) on Wednesday.

The city in the Southernmost part of the country has a population of about 14 thousand. The economically active portion of the population is mainly engaged in fisheries, agriculture, tourism, and in other private and public sector jobs.

Under the contract, MTCC will construct an asphalt carriageway of 71,164 square meters. A stormwater management system will also be installed under the project in addition to 650 cable junctions. At the completion levels of the project, 633 streetlights will be erected, speed breaks constructed and roads will be marked appropriately with crossings among others.

The lack of a proper stormwater management system in the city has been a major complaint of the residents of Fuvahmulah for years. In the rainy season, the sandy roads of the city are full of mud and holes. The mud and holes have always made life difficult for pedestrians and motorists in the city.

With the execution of the contract awarded to MTCC, the present government of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih hopes that all the old complaints of the people will vanish as they start a smooth walk and drive on the completed roads.
