In connection with his efforts to avenge his loss in the 2020 US election, Donald Trump was charged with a crime for the third time in four months on Tuesday, as he campaigns to regain the presidency next year.
Trump is accused of conspiring to defraud the US by obstructing Congress's certification of President Joe Biden's victory and denying voters their right to a free and fair election, according to the four-count indictment.
On Thursday, a federal court judge ordered Trump to make his initial appearance.
The indictment alleges Trump conspired with six other unnamed individuals to overturn the results. Prosecutors wrote that Trump knew his claims that the election was fraudulent were false, but repeated them anyway to “create an intense national atmosphere of mistrust and anger and erode public faith in the administration of the election.”
