Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid meets with the Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives, Mr. Zhang Lizhong, to discuss the ongoing consultations on Maldives debt service obligations.

Ambassador Zhang stated that during the meeting, Minister Shahid expressed appreciation for the progress of debt suspension implemented by China to the Maldives under the G20 Debt Service Suspension Initiative (DSSI).

Following the meeting in a tweet, Minister Shahid said that following the constructive dialogue throughout the discussions, he is confident on a positive outcome and strengthened partnership. Ambassador Zhang also tweeted that China is always ready to offer its helping hand to the Maldives for a strengthened partnership, and shared future.

This falsifies the statements by the Speaker of the Parliament, Mohamed Nasheed. Speaking at the recent Maldivian Democratic Party meeting, Nasheed has stated that China will not be willing to help to ease debt repayment.
