Chinese Ambassador to Maldives Zhang Lizhong has said that although jewelry inherited from grandma is very precious with a price, China would prefer friendship, which is priceless.

Chinese Ambassador’s comment comes following the statement by the former President and current Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed. Nasheed has said that even if we sell our grandmother’s jewelry, we won’t be able to repay the debts for China.

Adding to his statement, Ambassador Zhang Lizhong shared a written interview by Mr. Liu Kun, Minister of Finance, China, addressing the Debt Service Suspension Initiative (DSSI) framework by the G20 Leaders’ Summit.

The statement by the Chinese Minister of Finance Mr. Liu Kun reads that as a G20 member and a creditor, China gives priority to the DSSI’s implementation and since May this year, President Xi Jinping has made solemn commitments on several international occasions that China would work with other G20 members to implement the DSSI.

Minister Liu Kun highlighted that at the Extraordinary G20 Leaders’ Summit, leaders stated that they would continue to address risks of debt vulnerability in low-income countries due to the pandemic. He further added that the sudden attack of COVID-19 has dealt a heavy blow to the global economy, and debt vulnerabilities and debt sustainability in low-income countries have become even more prominent.

In his written interview, Minister Liu Kun has said that China will stay in close communication and coordination with other parties within G20 over the issue of debt vulnerabilities in the poorest countries. He added that China will continue to participate actively in the multilateral debt coordination process.

Minister highlighted that China will provide assistance to developing countries for their efforts in fighting against the pandemic and achieve economic and social recovery and development through bilateral and multilateral channels. Minister Liu Kun also stated that China will prioritize providing in various ways developing countries with vaccines against COVID-19 when it becomes available.

The shared written interview by Mr. Liu Kun, Minister of Finance, China, falsifies any debt clearance issues raised against China.
