Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has stated that the noble principles, pillars, and slogans of Islam must be fully respected when exercising freedom of expression.
In a message shared on social media, Dr. Shaheem said freedom of expression is a noble right protected in Islam for a noble purpose, but stressed that it also has clear limits. He emphasized that, particularly in political expression, it is essential to ensure that actions and speech do not violate Islamic values.
He noted that respecting Islamic rules and sanctities is a responsibility of all Muslims, adding that this principle aligns with the spirit of freedom of expression enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic of Maldives.
Dr. Shaheem’s remarks come amid heightened political debate in the country. Meanwhile, the Media Commission is investigating a cartoon published in a local media outlet, following concerns raised over religious sensitivities.
