The General Committee of the Parliament today approved a budget of MVR196.2 million for administrative and operating expenses.

The approved budget includes the expense to increase the salary allowances of parliamentary employees who have not been given a salary increment for 11 years. Therefore, with MVR 4.6 million as the allowances, a total budget of MVR 196.2 million was unanimously approved by the members present at today's meeting of the General Committee.

The parliamentary administration has estimated that MVR 187 million will be spent on running the parliament next year. This is an increase compared to the budget of MVR 182 million approved for this year.

According to the parliamentary administration, the budget for next year is expected to be higher than this year because the expenses of more elected members will have to be covered next year.

There are six new constituencies to be appointed to parliament next year. These include one seat for the Baa Atoll, one seat for the Kaafu Atoll, two seats for the Male' City, one seat for the Gaafu Alifu Atoll, and one seat for Addu City. Including the new constituencies, a total of 93 members will be appointed to parliament next year.
