Labeling President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu as pro-China is wrong, says Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed.

Nasheed made the remarks while addressing a geopolitical event held in Colombo during his unofficial visit to Sri Lanka.

Speaking at the event, President Nasheed said it is wrong to describe Dr. Muizzu as an anti-India person and that Dr. Muizzu is not against any country. Nasheed said Dr. Muizzu is pro-Maldives, and Dr. Muizzu would prioritize the people of the Maldives and support them to improve livelihoods.

However, after winning the election, many foreign media outlets have described Dr. Muizzu as pro-China.

Responding to this, Nasheed said it was difficult for him to describe Dr. Muizzu as a person who would give priority to any other country over Maldives.

Nasheed also said the first President to support the "India First Policy" was former President Yameen Abdul Qayyum. However, President Yameen later changed his mind, Nasheed said.
