The first President to be elected under the multi-party system of government in the Republic of Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed, has decided to retire from politics.

He announced this in a statement issued today.

According to the statement, President Nasheed has decided to step away from politics for years. He has also decided not to contest the upcoming parliamentary elections.

The decision came after being appointed Secretary General of the Climate Vulnerable Forum. Nasheed said he would take over the post in January next year.

According to the Constitution of the Maldives, a member of Parliament cannot hold any other office.
