The British High Commissioner to the Republic of the Maldives, Her Excellency Caron Röhsler, has said that the goal demonstrated by Ali Ashfaq was the quality that she greatly admires - which is persistence while describing Ali Ashfaq's stupendous solo goal for New Radiant in 2013.
Speaking to the Maldives National University Students Union (MNUSU) on Friday afternoon, Ms. Röhsler has also expressed her support for Ali Ashfaq’s goal in the AFC Cup Bracket Challenge.
“So I first heard about the bracket challenge on Twitter, I had no idea what it was and then a few days later I saw a big poster at the New Port in Male’ (near the bridge platform area) talking about this bracket challenge and decided I must find out what this is all about,” said Ms. Röhsler.
High Commissioner Ms. Röhsler has stated that she decided to support him on Twitter after seeing his goal.
“For me what it demonstrated was the quality that I greatly admire which is persistence. So first of all he is running with the goal with just the goalie ahead of him looks like its gonna be an easy win, but then two defenders catch up with him and they tackle him multiple times and he keeps on trying to get past them and he succeeds in the end so persistence is what it says to me.” Ms. Röhsler said while describing the goal.
Speaking about the AFC Cup Bracket Challenge campaign, Ms. Röhsler has said that it has brought the spirit of working together to achieve a common goal. She also stated that she further hopes that a similar kind of spirit to be applied to other much bigger challenges for issues like climate change and violence against women and girls which is an international campaign at the moment.
High Commissioner Ms. Caron Röhsler was appointed back in October last year. She is the first resident High Commissioner of Britain to the Maldives.
The AFC Cup Bracket Challenge is an online voting challenge started by the Asian Football Confederation with 32 contestants in a knockout format. These 32 contestants represent 32 different goals scored in the cup over the years.
