Home Land Security Minister Ali Ihsan has said that the government has decided to implement the death penalty.

Minister Ali Ihsan told a news conference today that the government has decided to implement the death penalty. The death penalty will be carried out per the law and regulations, he said.

“We will look at what needs to be done and what needs to be looked at, and we will do it within the laws and rules of the Maldives,” Ihsan said.

The last time the death penalty was carried out in Sri Lanka was in 1953, during the rule of then-President Mohamed Ameen. Although former President Yameen's government passed a rule to implement the death penalty by hanging or lethal injection, no death penalty was carried out in the Maldives during his term.
