The Maldivian government has decided to establish a disability management and rehabilitation center for the first time in the country.

The announcement came in the statement released by the Minister of Gender, Family and Social Services Aishath Mohamed Didi, on the occasion of International Day of Persons with Disabilities this Thursday. Minister Aishath Didi said that the preparation work is ongoing to establish a disability management and rehabilitation center for the first time in the country.

Further in the statement, the Minister urged all the organizations, NGO’s, government institutions to support to increase equal opportunities for persons with disabilities and support in meeting the basic needs of persons with disabilities.

Minister also noted that although the persons with disabilities are supported in various ways, there are more challenges faced by the persons with disabilities that are important to be addressed. Adding that establishing a disability management and rehabilitation center can provide all the services under one roof for persons with disabilities.

“This would be the first time a disability management and rehabilitation center will be established in the Maldives and the center will support in addressing concerns of persons with disabilities,” said Minister Aishath Didi.

Minister also highlighted that the Gender Ministry has been supporting persons with disabilities, focusing on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on people living with disabilities.

This year the International Day of Persons with Disabilities is marked under the theme: "Building back better: towards an inclusive, accessible and sustainable post-Covid-19 world by, for and with persons with disabilities".
