Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has stated that he would discuss with President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih about changing the current form of government from a Presidential system to a Parliamentary system.
Nasheed said this while answering a question at the ‘Ask Speaker’ program regarding whether the ruling party would win the upcoming Presidential elections and whether Nasheed would propose to change the current form of government, from the Presidential system to a Parliamentary system before the next Presidential elections in 2023.
In answer, Nasheed assured that the ruling party will win the upcoming Presidential elections and that without a doubt the Parliamentary system to run the government will be the best for the Maldives. Nasheed added that in the past, the government of the Maldives has run in a Parliamentary system. Nasheed also said that it has only been around 20 years when the form of government has changed from a Parliamentary system.
Nasheed added that he will discuss with {resident Ibrahim Mohamed Solih about when it will be best to change the form of government, whether before or after the upcoming Presidential elections, and proceed with it properly.
Although President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has shown no interest, Nasheed has been very vocal and supportive of changing the current form of government, from the Presidential system to a Parliamentary system. In regards, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has already stated that changing the government system is in the hands of the people, and the people have already voted on what they want.
