In a significant move aimed at bolstering the longstanding partnership between the Republic of Maldives and Japan, the two governments today inked four bilateral agreements.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Moosa Zameer, and the Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives, Her Excellency Takeuchi Midori, officiated the signing ceremony, which took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The four Exchange of Notes signed during the ceremony are outlined as follows:

1) Exchange of Notes for Customs Patrol Craft: Under the Economic Cooperation Grant Act of Japan, provisions have been made for the acquisition of customs patrol craft.

2) Grant for Maritime Safety and Security Enhancement: A grant of 260 million Japanese Yen has been allocated for the implementation of the Project for the Enhancement of Ability in Maritime Safety and Security.

3) Grant for Strengthening Response to Natural Hazards: A grant totaling 600 million Japanese Yen has been earmarked for the provision of equipment aimed at enhancing Maldives' national response capacity to high-frequency natural hazards. This initiative will be executed through community empowerment under the Economic and Social Development Programme.

4) Grant for Equipment to Support Patrol Vessels: A grant of 56 million Japanese Yen has been allocated for the provision of equipment to support the operations of patrol vessels to the Maldives Customs Service, as part of the Economic and Social Development Programme.

Minister Zameer expressed gratitude for Japan's unwavering support and emphasized the pivotal role of this collaboration in driving the socio-economic advancement of the Maldives. He further underscored Japan's significance as a key development partner and reaffirmed Maldives' steadfast commitment to nurturing the excellent diplomatic relations shared between the two nations.



The signing ceremony was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Finance, Maldives Customs Service, National Disaster Management Authority, and the Embassy of Japan in the Maldives. This latest development marks a crucial milestone in the enduring friendship and cooperation between Maldives and Japan, paving the way for mutual growth and prosperity.
