The Democrats Party has voiced deep concern over the continued absence of former President Mohamed Nasheed, three years after a devastating terrorist attack targeted him. The Democrats, led by Nasheed himself, issued a statement today expressing dismay over the lack of progress in apprehending those responsible for the heinous act, which shook the nation in 2021.

The statement from the Democrats condemns the brazen nature of the terrorist attack that targeted a prominent government official and underscores the repeated intelligence warnings received by the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) indicating prior assassination plots against President Nasheed. It highlights the broader concerns about the state of the country's judicial system, citing delays in trials, the release of some suspects, and the absence of convictions related to the attack.

"The Democrats call upon state authorities to thoroughly investigate the terrorist attack on President Mohamed Nasheed, hold the perpetrators accountable, and expedite justice," the statement read.

President Nasheed was the victim of a fatal attack on May 6, 2021, as he left his residence en route to his car. Despite surviving the blast, he sustained severe injuries across multiple parts of his body, necessitating a grueling 16-hour surgical procedure conducted by a team of medical professionals at ADK Hospital.

The unresolved nature of the attack and the absence of justice for President Nasheed serve as poignant reminders of the challenges facing the nation's security apparatus and judicial system. The Democrats' call for swift action underscores the urgency of addressing these concerns and ensuring accountability for such egregious acts of violence.
