The Maldivian government has waived a fine of MVR 4.2 million imposed on the Indian vessel "Holy Spirit" for illegal fishing in Maldivian waters. The Civil Court recently ruled on a petition filed by the Ministry of Fisheries seeking to fine the vessel's operator, Anthony Jayabalan.

The fine, initially imposed by the Fisheries Ministry, was waived through a letter dated March 10, 2024, from the President's Office. Following this decision, the vessel, which had been seized by the state, was deported on March 17, 2024.

On May 7, 2024, the Ministry of Fisheries sent a letter to the Civil Court to withdraw the charges against the operator of the "Holy Spirit."

Illegal fishing in Maldivian waters remains a significant issue, with many foreign vessels seized by the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) for such activities.
