The Election Commission (EC) has reported that out of the 368 candidates, more than 60 candidates have submitted their financial statements after the Parliamentary elections.
EC Chairman Fuwad Thowfeek confirmed the receipt of over 60 financial statements and noted that the commission is continuing to receive additional submissions from candidates. The General Elections Act mandates that all candidates must submit their financial statements to the EC within 30 days of the election's conclusion. For the recent Parliamentary election candidates, this deadline is set for May 22, 2024.
Candidates who fail to submit their financial statements or provide false information face stringent penalties, including imprisonment for up to one year or a fine of MVR 72,000. The EC emphasizes the importance of these disclosures in maintaining the integrity and transparency of the electoral process.
To further promote transparency, the EC will publish all submitted financial statements on its website.
