The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has mandated Israel to immediately cease its military offensive in the southern Gaza city of Rafah and withdraw from the enclave, on Friday.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has emphasized the imperative for Israel to comply with an International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruling mandating an immediate cessation of its military offensive in Rafah, Gaza. The ICJ's decision, prompted by a case initiated by South Africa, accuses Israel of genocide and underscores the peril faced by the Palestinian population.

In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), President Muizzu welcomed the ICJ's ruling and urged Israel to swiftly adhere to it. He emphasized the urgency of ending what he termed "unspeakable acts of brutality" and called for the facilitation of humanitarian aid to alleviate the suffering in Rafah.

President Muizzu reiterated the Maldives' steadfast support for the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state, emphasizing its pivotal role in achieving enduring peace in the region. He stressed the necessity of upholding internationally recognized borders, with East Jerusalem serving as the capital of Palestine.

In a landmark decision, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) has mandated Israel to immediately cease its military offensive in the southern Gaza city of Rafah and withdraw from the enclave, on Friday. The ruling comes in response to a case initiated by South Africa, accusing Israel of genocide and highlighting the grave risks faced by the Palestinian population.

Delivered by a 15-judge panel, the ruling marks the third instance this year where the ICJ has issued preliminary orders to mitigate the death toll and alleviate humanitarian suffering in Gaza. While legally binding, the court lacks enforcement capabilities, emphasizing the importance of voluntary compliance.

President Nawaf Salam, representing the ICJ, underscored that previous provisional measures, issued in March, had failed to adequately address the dire situation in Rafah. Consequently, the court deemed it necessary to issue a new emergency order, citing the "disastrous" humanitarian conditions prevailing in the region.

The ICJ's ruling explicitly instructs Israel to halt all military operations in the Rafah Governorate immediately, in order to prevent further harm to the Palestinian population. Additionally, the court emphasized the imperative for Israel to facilitate the safe passage of humanitarian aid through the Rafah crossing.

South Africa's legal representatives had petitioned the ICJ last week, urging emergency measures to halt Israel's attacks on Rafah and ensure the survival of the Palestinian people.
