President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, following the Cabinet's recommendation, has initiated the development of a comprehensive master plan to tackle tobacco consumption in the Maldives.

This bold move is aimed at curbing tobacco use and achieving a lasting solution over the next four years.

The masterplan will incorporate additional measures alongside the enforcement of existing tobacco control laws and regulations. President Muizzu has instructed that the first draft of the plan be presented during the upcoming Cabinet meeting scheduled for October 27, 2024.

The decision was made after in-depth discussions at the most recent Cabinet meeting. A key focus of the masterplan is the promotion of a smoke-free society. Among the proposed initiatives are programs to empower social workers, introduce incentives for non-smoking islands, and provide financial support for social activities on these islands to foster a healthier lifestyle.

Additionally, President Muizzu has directed that relevant authorities ensure free smoking cessation programs are available at all health centres across the country for individuals seeking help to quit smoking. This initiative underscores the government's commitment to improving public health and reducing the negative impact of tobacco on society.

The plan is expected to pave the way for a healthier, smoke-free Maldives by 2028.
