President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to develop a comprehensive master plan aimed at harnessing the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) for the economic benefit of the Maldives.

The initiative, which follows a recommendation from the Cabinet, will be designed per regional best practices, focusing on both risk management and the creation of a legal framework to regulate AI technology.

The decision was made during the Cabinet meeting held on October 16, 2024, after extensive deliberations on the strategic advantages of AI in boosting economic development.

President Muizzu emphasized that the master plan will not only outline the opportunities AI presents for the Maldives but also address the challenges and risks associated with its use. The aim is to ensure that AI is applied responsibly while maximizing its potential to contribute to key economic sectors.

Once the master plan is finalized, the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology and the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade will submit the necessary documentation to the Cabinet for review. This step underscores the government's commitment to incorporating cutting-edge technologies into its development agenda, with a focus on sustainable growth and innovation.

The AI master plan is expected to be a significant milestone in the Maldives' efforts to modernize its economy and remain competitive in the rapidly evolving global tech landscape.
