The Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has appointed new leadership, with Dr. Abdulla Khalil elected as Deputy Leader and Ibrahim Abdul Razzaq, CEO of IGMH, as Secretary General.
Both were unanimously chosen during the party’s Senate meeting held earlier today.
The PPM, founded by former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, has seen several leadership changes over the years. President Maumoon initially formed the party following a dispute with then-DRP leader, Thasmeen Ali. However, after a political rivalry between President Maumoon and his nephew, former President Abdulla Yameen, Maumoon was eventually expelled from the PPM.
Following the election of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, relations between President Yameen and Muizzu deteriorated, leading to Yameen's departure from the PPM. The recent appointments of Dr. Khalil and Ibrahim Abdul Razzaq are seen as part of the party’s efforts to rebuild its leadership and navigate the changing political landscape.
