The 20th Parliament of Maldives was officially sworn in today during a special session held at the Parliament House. Chief Justice Ahmed Muhthasim Adnan administered the oaths to the 93 newly elected members, who subsequently signed the official register.

The Progressive National Congress (PNC) has secured a substantial majority in this new Parliament, with 75 seats. The party has designated Inguraidhoo Constituency MP Ibrahim Falah as the Parliamentary Group leader. Supporting him, Baarashu Constituency MP Ibrahim Shujau will serve as the Senior Deputy Parliamentary Group Leader, while Vilimale Constituency MP Mohamed Ismail, Mahibadhoo Constituency MP Ahmed Thorig, and Hulhudhoo Constituency MP Mohamed Shahid have been appointed as Deputy Leaders.

The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) holds the minority in this session with 12 seats. Hithadhoo South MP Ibrahim Nazil has been chosen as the MDP Parliamentary Group Leader, with Vaikaradhoo MP Hussain Ziyadh and Maradhoo MP Ahmed Didi serving as Deputy Parliamentary Group Leaders.

Additionally, the Parliament includes two independent members.

In a session today, the election of the Speaker and Vice-Speaker of the Parliament is set to occur. The PNC Parliamentary Group has endorsed Funadhoo Constituency MP Abdul Raheem Abdullah for the position of Speaker and Dhiggaru Constituency MP Ahmed Nazim for Vice-Speaker.
