President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to submit the "Treaty Between the Government of the Republic of Maldives and the Government of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters" to the Parliament for approval. The decision, made upon the Cabinet's recommendation, followed a detailed discussion on a paper presented by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs during today’s Cabinet meeting.

The treaty aims to fortify the long-standing relationship between the Maldives and Sri Lanka by enhancing mutual support and cooperation in addressing criminal offenses. Under the terms of the treaty, both nations are committed to assisting each other in a broad spectrum of criminal cases, ensuring that such cooperation adheres to their respective legal frameworks and the provisions of the treaty.

Initiated in 2011, the preliminary work on this mutual legal assistance treaty underscores a decade-long commitment to enhancing legal collaboration between the two countries. Once ratified, the treaty will formalize procedures for cooperation in criminal matters, facilitating the exchange of information, evidence, and support in investigations and prosecutions.

The submission of this treaty to the Parliament for approval marks a pivotal step in strengthening the legal and diplomatic ties between the Maldives and Sri Lanka, ensuring a coordinated and effective approach to criminal justice.
