Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam today affirmed that the government will take no actions detrimental to fishermen and make all sector-related decisions in consultation with relevant authorities. This assurance came as Minister Shiyam addressed participants in the ongoing protest by fishing boats in the city, a demonstration initiated by the Bodu Kanneli Masveringe Union.
The protest, driven by numerous fishermen, calls on the government to refrain from issuing lane fishing permits, commence fish purchases from the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) as promised, and settle outstanding payments owed to fishermen.
Minister Shiyam emphasized that the fishermen's perspectives will be considered before any decisions are finalized. He noted that the fisheries ministry is exploring ways to increase state revenue beyond lane fishing, with the goal of enhancing living conditions for Maldivians.
He mentioned that proposals, including lane fishing to boost income, have been discussed with the large fish fishermen's union, acknowledging their concerns.
Minister Shiyam urged the fishermen to remain calm and assured them of the government's support. He further assured that no decisions would be made without consulting the fishermen, emphasizing the government's commitment to their welfare.
