Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan stated on Saturday that U.S. President Joe Biden is facing “a test of sincerity” in his management of the Gaza war. Erdogan's comments came during an interview with reporters on his return flight from the G7 Summit in Italy.
Erdogan emphasized that Biden must prove the Gaza ceasefire plan is a genuine effort to end the conflict, rather than a calculated move to secure electoral gains. “Biden is expected to demonstrate that the Gaza ceasefire plan is not a calculated electoral tactic but a sincere effort to end the war,” Erdogan said.
In the same interview, Erdogan revealed that Germany has eased its opposition to the sale of Eurofighter jets to Turkey. In November, Turkey announced it was in discussions with Britain and Spain to purchase Eurofighter Typhoons, despite Germany’s initial objections. “Eurofighters are important to us,” Erdogan added, signaling the significance of these aircraft for Turkey's defense capabilities.
On the domestic front, Erdogan addressed economic issues, expressing optimism about inflation trends. He predicted that inflation would reach a more favorable level in the final quarter of the year, crediting forthcoming adjustments to interest rates. “Policies aimed at rebalancing the economy are bearing fruit,” Erdogan noted, suggesting that the government's economic strategies are beginning to show positive results.
These remarks from President Erdogan highlight Turkey’s strategic defense interests and its ongoing economic challenges, while also reflecting on international diplomatic dynamics in the context of the Gaza conflict.
