The chairperson of the adjudicatory chamber of the independent Ethics Committee has provisionally suspended the Football Association of Maldives (FAM) President, Bassam Adeel Jaleel, from all football-related activities for nine months. This decision, effective immediately, follows Article 86 of the FIFA Code of Ethics (FCE).
The suspension results from an investigation initiated by the Prosecutor General’s Office of Maldives. On October 22, 2023, a search of FAM House uncovered allegations of money laundering, embezzlement, corruption, and other criminal offenses involving FIFA funds misuse by FAM officials. Following this, the investigatory chamber requested Jaleel's suspension.
After reviewing the preliminary investigation information, the chairperson of the investigatory chamber found a prima facie case against Jaleel, leading to formal investigation proceedings. Jaleel potentially violated several articles of the FCE, including General Duties (Article 14), Conflicts of Interest (Article 20), Offering and Accepting Gifts (Article 21), and Misappropriation and Misuse of Funds (Article 29).
Jaleel was notified of his suspension on Thursday, marking the start of his nine-month ban from all national and international football activities.
