President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has decided to submit the text of the Samoa Agreement with the Organisation of African, Caribbean, and Pacific States (OACPS) to the Parliament for approval, following a recommendation from the Cabinet. The decision came after discussions on a paper presented by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs during the Cabinet meeting held yesterday.
The Samoa Agreement serves as the primary framework for the European Union's relations with African, Caribbean, and Pacific countries. It addresses six key priority areas aimed at tackling the major challenges of the next two decades: human rights, democracy, and governance; peace and security; human and social development; inclusive, sustainable economic growth and development; environmental sustainability and climate change; and migration and mobility.
Signing the agreement and achieving full membership in the OACPS would allow the Maldives to access numerous opportunities provided by the European Union across various sectors. This membership is expected to lead to improved international prices for Maldivian fisheries products and other economic benefits.
