During a heated parliamentary debate on the government's public debt bill, Baarashu Constituency MP Ibrahim Shujau accused the previous Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) government of misappropriating state funds under the guise of COVID-19 relief efforts.

MP Shujau alleged that the MDP government exploited the pandemic to make illegal gains and failed to provide necessities to the people. He claimed to have thoroughly examined the financial records, which, according to him, revealed significant misuse of state resources.

Shujau expressed strong disapproval of the MDP's actions, suggesting that party members should feel ashamed of their governance during the pandemic. He emphasized that, contrary to recent criticisms, the current government is committed to reducing the number of political employees.

"The number of political employees of this government will not increase to 700; the number will be further reduced. It will be less than 700. We’re trying to minimize it even more," Shujau stated during the debate.

These remarks were made in response to the MDP's claims that the current administration has failed to manage the economy effectively, leading to a significant downturn. The MDP accused the government of increasing the number of political employees to over 2,000, with a monthly expenditure of MVR 700 million on their salaries.
