A total of 1,289 workers have been detained for attempting to enter the Maldives on tourist visas, according to Maldives Immigration. Deputy Chief Immigration Officer Mohamed Shifan stated at a press conference today that most of these individuals are Bangladeshi workers.
Additionally, 341 people from 22 countries who tried to enter the Maldives with forged work visas have been stopped, mostly Bangladeshis. Immigration statistics reveal that 1,664 foreigners attempted to enter the Maldives using invalid documents, while 33 tried to enter with fake documents, and one used forged documents.
In a related development, Immigration reported that a foreigner married to a Maldivian woman was deported after being involved in a prostitution network. Other foreigners involved in the case have also been deported.
To address these issues, Maldives Immigration has introduced Immigration Watch, a service to report illegal immigrants or other immigration-related issues. The service, launched by Controller General of Immigration Mohamed Shamaan Waheed, aims to enhance community safety and maintain immigration laws by providing a streamlined approach to identifying illegal immigrants and fraudulent entry attempts.
Immigration Watch will maintain the confidentiality of the reporter and the reported case, offering the public an opportunity to prevent serious crimes by sharing valuable information through the platform. This service will be available 24 hours a day online through the Immigration website.
