President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced significant measures to address the issue of undocumented workers in the Maldives, following recommendations from the Cabinet. This decision came after a comprehensive discussion on a proposal submitted by the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology during a Cabinet meeting held on Sunday.

The measures, designed to manage the situation of expatriates across inhabited, resort, industrial, and agricultural islands, include implementing ten fingerprint scans and facial recognition for identification purposes. Additionally, programs for regularization and Assisted Voluntary Return (AVR) will be established for those opting to return home voluntarily.

In a move to strengthen the enforcement system against illegal immigration, the Cabinet has resolved to publicly disclose a list of companies that neglect their responsibilities toward migrant workers upon arrival. This includes enforcing penalties for employer non-compliance and taking further action if these issues recur.

The Cabinet also decided to conduct audits and pursue strict legal action against undocumented workers in the Maldives. This initiative aims to remove obstacles to employment opportunities for Maldivian youth caused by the presence of undocumented workers.

To provide a permanent solution to the problem of undocumented workers, the Cabinet has decided to place amendments to the Maldives Employment Act (2/2008) in Parliament at the earliest opportunity.

These measures mark a significant step towards addressing the longstanding issue of undocumented workers in the Maldives and aim to ensure better management and regulation of expatriate labor in the country.
