Fayyaz Ismail, the Chairperson of the opposition MDP, stated tonight that decisions eroding national identity have once again created an atmosphere of fear in the Maldives.

In a post on 'X' related to National Day, MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail said that to maintain the Maldives as a fully independent nation, it is crucial to simultaneously preserve individual, internal, and external independence. He added that history shows that every time the Maldives lost its independence, it was due to careless and treacherous acts committed by some Maldivians for personal gain or in the name of finding better solutions for the people.

'As National Day dawns, decisions that compromise nationality and national identity have once again created fear in the Maldivian atmosphere,' said Fayyaz, who also previously served as the Minister of Economic Development.

Furthermore, Fayyaz stated that National Day is the most appropriate day for citizens to speak up and voice their opinions on these matters."

The 1st day of Rabi' al-Awwal in the Islamic calendar is celebrated as National Day to commemorate and revive the memory of Al-Ghazi Muhammad Thakurufaanu Al-Auzam (Bodu Thakurufaanu) liberating the Maldives from Portuguese rule on the 1st of Rabi' al-Awwal in the year 981 Hijri.
